Veterinarian

Dr. Amgad Basta Jr.

It is great to be back in beautiful, sunny South Florida.  My journey began in 1993 when I first entered college at Florida International University. I just graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School and was excited to start my college career.  I worked part-time with my father, Dr. Basta Sr., helping out at various animal hospitals around the city.  I had aspirations of becoming a human physician.  Well, that all changed one hot summer night in 1995 at approximately 11 PM.  I was helping out at the emergency clinic my father was working in at the time and I suddenly heard my name being screamed out.  The voice was telling me to “.hurry, rush to the OR, move it…”  In a state of panic, I ran to the OR as fast as I could, and as I entered the room there placed in my hand suddenly was a newborn Labrador Retriever puppy that had just been born via c-section.

My father ever so diligently working to free the rest of the pups, “told” me, more like screamed at me, “Don’t just stand there, rub him down with the towel and suction the mucus out of his airway.”  I was in a state of disbelief, standing there with a blank stare on my face but I heard my dad’s voice again, “..hurry up-here comes another one.”  Suddenly, I came to my senses and started working that pup, determined that he would survive and breathe. As I was suctioning the mucus and fluid from his airway, the sweetest cry and whine came from the little pup’s mouth.  “I did it!!!!” I exclaimed. “I really, really did it!!!”  As soon as I set down the pup with his previously delivered siblings, there came another one.  At the end of the day the mom and pups all survived and I looked at my dad sweating and exhausted from the delivery and just marveled.  I admired him so much for bringing these precious creatures safely to life and allowing me the experience of a lifetime, at least in my eyes at that moment.   From that one fateful previously uneventful night a veterinarian was in the making.

I soon thereafter graduated from Florida International University with a bachelor’s degree in biology and pursued a post-baccalaureate at the University of Florida in animal science and graduated with honors.  I then pursued my veterinary career attending Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Missouri, College of Veterinary Medicine for my clinical year.

Graduating in January of 2004, I moved to NYC and practiced general medicine and surgery in Queens, Long Island and Manhattan. I then started doing emergency medicine and surgery in Queens, New York for about one year as part of a ten doctor practice.  In January of 2006 I received a phone call from my dad, my very inspiration, telling me he needed my help; he was overworked and ready to semi-retire.  So here I am, loving every moment of my journey with its ups and downs and dedicated to my profession, family and home.  I am here to stay and with one goal in mind to serve my patients, clients and community to the best of my abilities with care and compassion. Whether you come from Aventura, Broward, Miami Beach, Hialeah or any other part of Florida I hope to see you soon.

Technician

Kenny Roman

I am originally from the Bronx, New York. I started working at a young age with my father and have had a variety of jobs. At 16, I was hired to work in an animal hospital as a maintenance worker. Wanting to make a career for myself, I spent as much time as I could with the veterinarians as well as the technicians. Within a year I became a veterinary technician. I have been a veterinary technician since 1997. I love my job. I became acquainted professionally with Dr. Amgad Basta in New York City in 2004. We have an excellent professional relationship. In April 2006, I was given the opportunity to move to Florida to work with Dr. Basta at Kind Animal Hospital. It has been a great experience.
